RS Zest
calcActive())">
At Proasail.com we recommend the RS Zest to sailing schools and families looking for a sailing dinghy that works both for learning to sail and for progressing further. Successor to the RS Quba and designed by Jo Richards with RS Sailing, this compact boat offers a roomier cockpit than boats of its size from earlier generations: two crew sail in comfort and, even so, the boat remains manageable enough to go out single-handed. Instructors will find practical solutions already built into the design: the pivoting centreboard, the rudder stock with Lift & Lock system, the mainsail that reefs by rolling around the mast and the centre thwart where the beginner crew sits securely. The hull is built in Comptec PE3 rotomoulded polyethylene, a three-layer construction that stands up to the daily use of a sailing school with minimal maintenance. If you are after a first boat that is stable, simple to rig and fun to sail, the RS Zest brings those three qualities together in a hull built to last.

Space – Protection – Safety
- Many boats of this length are designed for one person and end up being sailed two-up. The RS Zest turns that around: it was designed as a mini two-hander, with real room for two, and sails single-handed just as easily.
- The RS Zest was conceived from the outset with a cockpit for two: a mini two-hander that stays comfortable and balanced when sailed alone.
- Beginners do not have to hang over the side: the cockpit lets them sit inside or move up onto the side deck, and with three different seating positions each student progresses at their own pace. It is the mini two-hander with the most crew room in its class.
- The youngest sailors handle it with ease and, at the same time, two adults fit aboard comfortably.
- The centre thwart gives the beginner crew a firm seat from which to gain confidence, rather than sitting on the cockpit floor.
- A hull with exceptional form stability, a solid base for learning.
- After a capsize, getting back aboard is much easier: helm and crew have grab handles moulded into the hull itself.
Practical features for instructors and families
- Stepping the mast is a one-student job, even for the youngest, thanks to the hinged stepping system.
- The mast gate closes with a simple click mechanism ("Clic-Clac"): quick and secure.
- Rudder stock with Lift & Lock system, which holds the blade in the up or down position. Simple and robust.
- Pivoting centreboard rather than a daggerboard: less effort to handle and better at taking knocks.
- Reefing by rolling the mainsail around the mast (roller furling): sail is reduced easily from aboard or from the instructor's RIB.
- High-visibility coloured sail, easy to spot from the shore or from the safety boat.
- Towing eye built into the hull: allows towing in a train of up to 6 boats.
Fun – Simple – Stylish
- Sails with the liveliness that characterises every RS.
- Modern, well-judged lines.
- Design details made for real-world use in sailing schools and families.
Low maintenance – Great durability
- Comptec PE3 hull, RS Sailing's three-layer rotomoulding system.
- High-strength outer skin, a foam core that provides stiffness and a robust inner skin.
- The process allows the material thickness to vary and reinforces the areas of the hull that carry the most load.
- The overall weight is optimised and the boat is livelier and more pleasant to sail, like every RS.
- The hull's own shape spreads the loads, with no need for added reinforcement.
- The foam middle layer provides reserve buoyancy: the boat stays afloat at all times.
- Brass inserts moulded into the structure to fix the fittings solidly.
- Virtually zero maintenance.
Maximum value
- RS quality at a keen price for sailing schools and private owners.
