RS Quest
calcActive())">
At Proasail.com we suggest the RS Quest to sailing schools and families that need a sailing dinghy with room to spare: an instructor can go afloat with two or three students, and parents can go sailing with their children. At 4.29 m long, it remains easy to handle both ashore and afloat. It is the work of Jo Richards and RS Sailing, and its origins lie in the needs of the UK Sea Cadets; today no other dinghy of its type sells in such numbers worldwide. Why do we recommend it? Because the school gets, in a single beginner boat, a rotomoulded polyethylene hull that hardly needs any maintenance and a stable, spacious platform. Add to that a reefable mainsail, the option of adding a spinnaker and space to stow the gear.

Big thrills in a compact boat
- Hull rotomoulded in Comptec PE3 polyethylene.
- Designed to withstand daily sailing-school use with very little maintenance.
- No other boat of this length offers such a stable hull, and for the beginner that translates into confidence.
- Up to four adults fit in the cockpit, which is also self-draining.
Configurable to suit you
- Two configurations: fully open-plan cockpit, or with a foredeck that deflects the spray.
- Both the seats and the centre thwart can be removed.
- Basic mainsail and jib sail plan (8.4 m² and 2.7 m²).
- As an option, a symmetric spinnaker (10 m²) or an asymmetric/gennaker (11 m²).
- Optional trapeze kit.
- Optional outboard bracket.
Adventures on the water
A boat that brings together what a family needs to go sailing and exploring.
Fun and lively, but also practical and encouraging for anyone learning.
It tows on a trailer without fuss and rigs quickly.
Excellent for training
- The British Sea Cadets and sail-training experts took part in the boat's development.
- Exceptionally practical and versatile: it works for the beginners' lesson and for the family outing.
- It is the best-selling sailing-school boat of its size in the world.
Convenient ashore and afloat
- Stepping the mast is easier thanks to the hinged mast foot.
- Handles for lifting and moving it comfortably.
- Towing eyes.
- Lifting points.
- Ashore it rests on three keel bands, a three-point support that keeps it stable when beached.
- Reinforced rubbing strake around the transom.
Easy rig control
- Furling jib, which makes launching and recovering the boat safer and more comfortable.
- The mainsail has a reef band to shorten sail when the wind gets up.
- Two-piece aluminium mast.
- The top mast section is foam-filled: if the boat capsizes, it is harder for it to turn fully turtle, mast down.
- Halyards and boom controls run externally, in view, so maintenance is simpler.
- The sails are cut in Dacron, a cloth designed to withstand many hours of use.
Easy-to-use foils
- GRP pivoting centreboard.
- The rudder blade is aluminium, built to take the heavy use of a sailing school.
- Rudder with Lift & Lock system: the blade is raised using the tiller and locks in place.
RS Quest Options
- Foredeck, which adds a stowage space.
- Mainsail in different sizes.
- Asymmetric spinnaker (gennaker).
- Symmetric spinnaker.
- Masthead float.
- Trapeze kit.
