RS 100

The RS 100 is the single-handed asymmetric that at Proasail.com we recommend to racers looking for a demanding, rewarding sailing dinghy sailed by hiking, without a trapeze. Designed by Paul Handley, it combines an epoxy and glass fibre sandwich hull with carbon spars, and every detail is carefully finished. RS Sailing conceived it so that high performance would be within reach of many sailors, not just a few: with three mainsail sizes (7.4, 8.4 and 10.2 m²) there is a suitable rig for almost any sailor weight. The cockpit is designed for comfortable hiking in any conditions, at sea and on inland waters alike, and the boat responds sharply to every adjustment: a reward for anyone who enjoys a challenge.

Hull

  • Epoxy and glass fibre foam sandwich: the hull is light (52 kg), stiff and stays competitive for many years.
  • Easy to handle thanks to a relatively fine bow; the waterline beam aft takes care of stability.
  • Reserve buoyancy from two sources: the flared decks and the wings moulded into the hull.
  • The chine edges deflect the water and keep the cockpit drier.

Foils

  • Both the centreboard and the rudder blade kick up, which keeps things simple.
  • Recovering and launching the boat is easier and, if you touch the bottom, the risk of serious damage is kept to a minimum.

Cockpit

  • Among sailors who have sailed it, you often hear that it is the most comfortable hiking boat they know.
  • The mainsheet swivel cleat sits well forward in the cockpit, which helps you tack and gybe smoothly without sinking the stern in light winds.
  • Cunningham and kicker are led to both sides, on the wings; the centreboard goes up and down with a simple action.

Spars

  • Rotating two-piece carbon mast, easier to carry on the car or load into a container.
  • For the 10.2 m² mainsail a removable extension is added at the mast base.
  • There is no forestay. With nothing ahead of the mast, working the asymmetric is far easier, and the carbon mast, supported only by the shrouds, adapts better to conditions upwind.
  • Why shrouds on a single-hander? Because with the asymmetric up a gust tends to bend the mast forward, and that is exactly what the shrouds limit. It is the way to help keep the bow up and stop it burying without paying the price, in euros and in kilos, of an ultra-stiff mast.
  • To control the boom, a twin-tube compression strut kicker (gnav): easy to adjust and highly effective on mainsail shape.

Sails

  • Three mainsails to choose from according to sailor weight: 7.4, 8.4 and 10.2 m².
  • 12.5 m² gennaker with a wide chute under the foredeck, for quick hoists and drops.
  • The clear space ahead of the mast, which is set aft and has no forestay, leaves plenty of room to handle the gennaker and makes gybing it easier.
