RS 800
calcActive())">
At Proasail.com we see the RS 800 as the twin-trapeze skiff many racers aspire to:
the natural step both for those coming out of youth dinghy sailing and for those moving up from slower classes. It is a class open to everyone: women's, men's and mixed crews race the RS 800, young and not so young. Weight is the key: with a sailing dinghy this light and so little hull drag, you do not need a huge rig to reach high speeds. That is why the sheet loads are manageable for men and women alike, and the performance equalisation system explains why mixed crews are regulars on the podiums of the RS racing circuit. And around the class there are friends, parties and an engaging social scene around the racing.

Sensational skiff racing
- High-performance racing, intense and within reach of men and women
- Friendly handling that opens the door to skiff sailing for many racers
- The performance equalisation system means the winner can be big or small
- A lively class, with action and camaraderie on the RS racing circuit
Hull
- Less drag thanks to a hull that is long and narrow at the waterline
- The flared topsides provide reserve buoyancy and more forgiving behaviour
- From the cockpit, the helm steers from a secure position and experienced crews have room to string together fluid manoeuvres
- Big gennaker chute positioned ahead of the jib tack: fast hoists with minimal loads
- Complete boat ready to sail: 110 kg, a surprisingly low figure
- High-tech construction in RS Sailing's epoxy foam sandwich, enormously strong and with a long competitive life.
Foils
- Daggerboard: an efficient foil with little hydrodynamic drag
- Lifting rudder blade that makes launching and recovering the boat easier
- Strong, light and high-performance: the foils are built in a sophisticated GRP (glass-reinforced polyester) sandwich with a foam core
Rig
- With such a low all-up weight, a moderately sized rig is enough for exceptional performance; that is why the RS 800 is a skiff within reach of many racers
- The ultralight carbon composite mast has a flexible top section that absorbs gusts with an excellent response
- The mast is sealed, so after a capsize the boat is less inclined to turn turtle
- Mainsail and jib are cut in Mylar laminate: light and strong, with good visibility through the sails
- Light, forgiving rig: on the mainsail, only the top two battens are full-length
- Manoeuvres are simpler, and more so offwind, because the jib is self-tacking
- Two design decisions on the asymmetric gennaker: the clew is high, for a better view under the sail, and the foot is relatively short, so the sheet carries little load
Equalised racing
- The performance equalisation system takes account of crew weight and righting moment: fast, close racing in which both big and small crews win. It works, and it is an essential part of the RS 800's success
- With mixed crews and events shared with other big RS classes, the RS 800 is the place to enjoy skiff racing to the full
