RS 500

If you are looking for a fast, exciting skiff-style two-person sailing dinghy with a single trapeze, at Proasail.com we recommend the RS 500: behind it stands a first-rate European racing circuit and an enviable social scene. Every year the RS 500 World Championship is held at a spectacular venue; the class, international and infectiously popular, keeps growing. Designed by Phil Morrison, it offers asymmetric skiff performance, one-design racing and an age range that runs from youth sailors to adults. And best of all: neither the cost nor the experience required is as high as you might expect. At Proasail.com we sum it up like this: plenty of sailing, and the RS community's approach to racing.

World Sailing INTERNATIONAL CLASS
- A class that keeps adding to its fleet and is a regular on the RS Racing Circuit.
- The class has a comprehensive programme that includes an annual World Championship.
- Moderate-weight crews are the best fit, and many of them are mixed.
- Single trapeze, gennaker and one-design rules: fast racing between equal boats.
Speed and control
- Light and stiff, the RS 500 slips along with little drag and delivers exciting performance without complicating the handling.
- Four criteria guided every part of the design: add performance, simplify sailing, remove complication and streamline construction.
- For comfort, its clear, roomy cockpit is the benchmark in the class, for adult and youth crews alike.
- The cockpit drains itself.
- With a pivoting centreboard and kick-up rudder, launching and recovery are easy and shallow water causes fewer problems.
Exciting and built to perform
- Quick to rig; simple to own; and competitive, fast and fun to sail.
- Hull, cockpit ergonomics and rig size came out of a long R&D effort with one goal: a boat that suits racers across a very wide range of weights.
- GRP composite hull: responsive in feel and efficient in performance.
- Low weight, plenty of stiffness and solidity.
Rig technology
- Power under control and the widest possible range of crew weights: that was the brief when designing the rig, with a size and loads that remain manageable.
- On the XL version (optional on the S), mainsail and jib are Mylar: less weight, less stretch, better visibility and more performance.
- The kicker is a compression strut type (gnav), mounted above the boom, and leaves the forward part of the cockpit clear: the crew crosses from side to side unobstructed.
- Asymmetric gennaker with chute and two retrieval patches on the sail.
Optional accessories
- Dacron "S" sails (smaller mainsail and jib; standard on the S version, optional on the XL), designed for sailing schools and hire centres.
- Breathable polycotton top cover
- Under cover (nylon)
- Launching trolley
- Road trailer base
- Padded rudder blade bag
- Rope trapeze lines (D12)
- Carbon fibre tiller extension
- Wind indicator
- TackTick Micro compass with mast bracket
- Race rope pack: tapered sheets and gennaker halyard
- Righting lines
