RS 400
calcActive())">
The RS 400 is the boat that put RS Sailing on the map and, from day one, a modern classic of dinghy sailing. At Proasail.com we recommend it to medium- and heavier-weight crews, often mixed, who want a two-person racing dinghy with an asymmetric and no trapeze: its powerful rig and high-volume hull are made for them. Designed by Phil Morrison, it is fast, well-mannered and carefully built, and its standard of racing keeps attracting top sailors. In the clubs and on the RS Racing Circuit it offers first-rate one-design racing, and the class has established itself as one of the most successful in modern dinghy sailing, with very active communities in the clubs and in the class itself. At Proasail.com we know the RS 400 inside out and will help you choose your boat and its equipment.

Thriving class
- If one boat embodies the idea of a "modern classic", it is the RS 400.
- A class with deep roots in the clubs and a strong presence on the RS Racing Circuit.
- Many elite sailors have passed through its fleet over the years: the asymmetric racing is of a high standard.
- The class atmosphere on the RS Racing Circuit is one of its great attractions.
- Designed with medium- to heavier-weight crews in mind; many of them are mixed.
Hull
- Fast, manoeuvrable and easy to sail in equal measure: a vice-free boat that is a pleasure to sail.
- The foam sandwich hull is light and stiff.
- Stiffness and strength have a direct consequence: the rig's power turns into speed with minimal losses.
- The open transom makes the cockpit virtually self-draining, and the self-bailer moulded into the hull quickly deals with any residual water.
- An ergonomically designed cockpit, laid out for comfortable hiking.
- The toe straps adjust for height and reach.
- When the wind drops, the crew sits comfortably on the centre thwart.
- Thanks to the generous beam, helm and crew contribute equal leverage when hiking; the helm can be large or small.
- The main controls are duplicated on both sides of the cockpit, so whoever has a free hand at that moment, helm or crew, can retrim the boat. The internal layout is simple and functional.
Foils
- Pivoting centreboard and kick-up rudder: the boat can race on any estuary, and launching or recovering it, from the beach or in shallow water too, is simple.
- GRP sandwich foils of advanced construction: strong, light and high-performance.
Rig
- Seldén developed a specific mast section for the RS 400; the whole rig is light too.
- Mast bend is adjusted with a screw at deck level and with the adjustable spreaders.
- Mast rake and lateral bend can be adjusted instantly with the jib halyard, which is led to the crew.
- A quality sail set that stays competitive for a long time.
- Both mainsail and jib are fully battened (full-length battens): the profile stays stable, the sail flogs less and lasts longer.
- Mast and mainsail are designed for each other, and that combination gives exceptional control over the power.
- Added to the large hull volume, the result is a very wide competitive crew weight range.
- The asymmetric spinnaker is easy to handle and, at the same time, fast, fun and a source of tactical options.
- Offwind, the RS 400 holds plenty of speed at almost any angle. The reason lies in the bowsprit: it can be swung to windward.
